Following the conclusion of the 2025 United States Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri's grip on the Formula 1 drivers' championship has tightened, now leading by just 14 points with only five races remaining in the season.
Piastri had a challenging outing at the Circuit of the Americas, ultimately finishing in fifth place. "It was a tough race for us today," said Piastri, the McLaren driver. "We couldn’t find the pace we needed to be competitive with the front runners, and that’s something we’ll need to address heading into Mexico."
In a contrasting performance, Piastri's teammate Lando Norris finished strongly in second place, benefiting from a fierce contest with Charles Leclerc. Norris’ performance earned him an eight-point boost, reducing the gap to his teammate ahead of the upcoming race in Mexico City. "Every point counts now,” said Norris. "We’re closing the gap, and the pressure is building, which is what I thrive on."
Max Verstappen, who has emerged as a formidable challenger, secured his third victory in four races. Now, with the momentum on his side, he is only 40 points behind Piastri in the championship standings. "Winning is all that matters now, and I’m ready to fight all the way to the end," stated Verstappen, representing Oracle Red Bull Racing.
The championship standings following the United States GP reflect the intense competition this season. Piastri leads with 346 points after seven wins, while Norris trails closely with 332 points, marking his fifth win of the season. Mercedes sits in second place with 341 points, closely followed by Ferrari at 334 points and Red Bull slightly behind with 331 points. "The constructors' title is still up for grabs, and it's all about consistency from here on out," commented a Mercedes team executive.
In the lower ranks, Williams appears set to achieve its best finish since 2017, currently holding down fifth place with 111 points. In a battle for sixth, Aston Martin and Sauber are separated by just three points. Sauber's recent resurgence has come partly thanks to Nico Hulkenberg's points-scoring performance in Austin.
