Yas Marina Circuit, known for its stunning views and vibrant atmosphere, played host to a momentous day in Formula 1 history on December 8, 2024. The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix became a stage for McLaren to solidify their comeback by claiming the Constructors’ Championship after a 26-year wait.

The race began with Lando Norris starting from pole position and successfully managing to retain his lead as the lights went out. Meanwhile, things took a challenging turn for teammate Oscar Piastri, who got involved in a collision with Max Verstappen. This incident left Piastri falling back to 19th place as he fought to regain positions throughout the race.

During the Virtual Safety Car period, Piastri demonstrated resilience, managing to overtake Colapinto, which brought him up to 18th. “I want to thank every single person at McLaren for what they've done for myself and Lando this year. We've had so many highs, and whilst there have also been lows, we kept pushing and it all culminated into today.” said Piastri, reflecting on the team’s journey this season.

Things became more complicated for Piastri after serving a 10-second penalty related to his earlier collision, yet his early pit stop set things in motion for a comeback strategy. After switching to the Hard tire and eventually returning to race in 15th, the Australian made further strides as more drivers around him opted for pit stops.

At the front, Norris continued to extend his lead, demonstrating an impressive performance. By Lap 25, he made a strategic pit stop to Hard tires, ensuring he maintained his dominance. “This feels incredible. The team have done an amazing job this season to come from where we were at the beginning. I’m so proud of everyone,” expressed Norris after clinching the victory by crossing the finish line in 1st place, further adding, “It’s been tough, but for us to win the Constructors’ Championship after 26 years is pretty special.”

The final stages of the race saw Piastri gain more positions, ending his race in 10th place. Despite the hurdles, he looked towards the future with optimism, saying, “I am so incredibly happy for the team. Whilst it was a tough race, we managed to seal the Constructors’ Championship, and that means more than anything for everyone.”

As the checkered flag waved, McLaren’s commendable performance brought them back to the forefront of racing. Team Principal Andrea Stella expressed his pride in the team’s achievement, stating, “I’m incredibly proud of the entire team here, both trackside and back at the factory. It’s been 26 years since we’ve won the Championship. It’s a wonderful feeling this evening.” He also acknowledged the contribution of fans and partners for their continued support throughout this demanding season.

In the spectrum of competition, Stella chose to commend Ferrari for their performance as well, saying, “Well done to Ferrari who drove a really good race today as well, and were great competitors.” The mutual respect between teams highlighted the spirit of sportsmanship in Formula 1.

This historic win not only represents a triumph for McLaren but signals their return to elite contention in the sport. As the team celebrates this cherished victory, they will also be keen on focusing on building momentum for the 2025 season.

Overall, the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will occupy a prominent place in the annals of McLaren history, celebrating not only a race victory but also the return of a championship legacy. McLaren's persistence in overcoming adversity has once again placed them at the apex of Formula 1, making fans eager for what the next season holds.
