In a significant shift within Formula 1, Carlos Sainz is leaving Ferrari to join Williams on a multi-year contract beginning in the 2025 season. This move comes after a period of speculation about Sainz’s future, particularly following Ferrari's decision to sign the famed Lewis Hamilton.
Sainz expressed his enthusiasm for this new chapter in his career, stating, "I am fully confident that Williams is the right place for me to continue my F1 journey and I am extremely proud of joining such a historic and successful team, where many of my childhood heroes drove in the past and made their mark on our sport." His excitement reflects a deep admiration for the legacy of Williams, a team with a storied history in Formula 1.
After winning three grand prix races since joining Ferrari in 2021, Sainz found himself in a challenging situation. His ambitions of continuing with a top-tier team were dashed when both Red Bull and Mercedes indicated they were looking elsewhere for drivers. "The ultimate goal of bringing Williams back to where it belongs, at the front of the grid, is a challenge that I embrace with excitement and positivity," Sainz added, underscoring his commitment to revitalize the team.
Williams, which has experienced difficulties in recent seasons, aims to make a resurgence in the competitive landscape of Formula 1. Sainz's decision to join Williams over opportunities with Alpine and Sauber, who will rebrand as Audi in 2026, indicates his belief in the team's potential. "I am convinced that this team has all the right ingredients to make history again and starting on January 1 I will give my absolute best to drive Williams forward," he said.
James Vowles, the team principal at Williams, welcomed Sainz with open arms, calling the signing a strong statement of intent. "Carlos joining Williams is a strong statement of intent from both parties. Carlos has demonstrated time and again that he is one of the most talented drivers on the grid, with race-winning pedigree, and this underlines the upwards trajectory we are on," Vowles emphasized, highlighting Sainz's reputation and skills.
Having a driver with Sainz's experience is expected to elevate the team's performance, as Vowles noted, "Carlos brings not just experience and performance, but also a fierce drive to extract every millisecond out of the team and car; the fit is perfect." Sainz will partner with Alex Albon, who also has a multi-year contract, and Vowles is optimistic about their combined potential. "In Alex and Carlos, we will have one of the most formidable driver line-ups on the grid and with huge experience to guide us into the new regulations in 2026," he said.
With this new partnership, Williams is positioning itself to make a significant impact in the coming seasons. Vowles urged fans not to underestimate the team’s ambitions, stating, "People should be in no doubt about our ambition and momentum as we continue our journey back to competitiveness - we are here, we are serious and with [owner] Dorilton’s backing we are investing in what it takes to return to the front of the grid."
The announcement also indicates a likely end to Logan Sargeant’s tenure with Williams, as the American driver, who joined the team in 2023, has struggled to keep pace with Albon. Speculation surrounding Sargeant's future suggests he may not find a seat next season after being outperformed consistently.
As 2025 approaches, all eyes will be on Carlos Sainz and Williams to see if this new alliance can indeed revive one of Formula 1's most historic teams back to its competitive best.
